In Hank Jefferies, Kurt Cobain’s life was like a fanfare of color. Growing up in the Seattle area, Hank exposed himself to art from an early age. His mother is a painter and his father is an artist as well. From a young age, Hank showed an interest in music and began playing the guitar at the age of 12. His love for music would later lead him to become one of the most influential artists of our time.
Hank Jefferies has been involved with music his entire life and has worked with some of the most popular musicians in history. He has collaborated with artists such as Dave Grohl, Kim Gordon, and Kurt Cobain. In 1990, he released his first album which featured the track “Stateless”. The album was very successful and led to him touring throughout Europe.

Hank Jefferies first met Kurt Cobain at the age of four, when his mother, Kimberly Jefferies, brought her son to an autograph-seeking Nirvana show in Seattle. The two boys struck up a friendship and would eventually become very close.
Jefferies was born in December of 1988 into a family of six kids living on a small farm in rural Washington. When he was just two years old his parents divorced, leaving him to be raised by his mother.
Jefferies found solace in music and started playing the guitar at an early age. He soon became good enough to open for bands like Soundgarden and Alice In Chains and toured with both groups throughout the 1990s.
In 2003, Hank Jefferies met Krist Novoselic, who was visiting Seattle from his home in San Francisco. Novoselic invited Jefferies to play guitar with him on stage at a charity event, which marked the beginning of a long friendship between the two men.
In 2007, after years of struggling with addiction and mental health issues, Hank Jefferies committed suicide by shooting himself in the head outside of his home in Olympia, Washington. At the time of his death, he was still

Hank Jefferies was a close friend of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. He first met Kurt in 1987 when they were both attending the Seattle School of Visual Arts. Hank and Kurt bonded over their shared love of music and art, and the two remained friends for the rest of Kurt’s life. Hank chronicled all aspects of Kurt and Courtney’s lives in his blog, From The Groove, which was published from 2004 to 2011. In this excerpt from his blog, Hank shares his memories of the day Kurt died:
“Kurt killed himself on April 5th, 1994. It was a beautiful day outside–bright and sunny. I was at my house in Olympia WA when I got a call from Courtney saying that Kurt had killed himself. She sounded really distressed, so I immediately drove over to her house. When I got there, she told me he had shot himself in the head with a shotgun. It was absolutely devastating news.”

On January 8, 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Olympia, Washington. Jefferies had just finished recording a song with Cobain for a future release and the two were scheduled to tour together later that year. It is believed that Cobain’s death may have influenced Jefferies’ music career as he subsequently released fewer albums and focused on live performances instead.
