How Helena And Loran Came To Nashville
Helena Carter was born and raised in Nashville, TN. After studying at Middle Tennessee State University and completing an MFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, she moved to Nashville in 2006 to pursue a career in writing.
Loran Carter was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He moved to Nashville in 2001 to attend the Belmont School of Music where he studied music theory and composition. He then transferred to Middle Tennessee State University where he earned his BFA in music performance. After graduating from college, Loran moved back to Memphis to start a music career there.
The two met while working on their respective music careers. They soon realized that they had a shared love of the city of Nashville and decided to make it their home. They started collaborative writing projects together and began publishing poetry chapbooks. In 2009, they published their first full-length book of poetry, The Nashville Poems. Since then, they have released numerous other books of poetry and short stories, as well as two albums of spoken word poetry.

Helena and Loran Carter have been living in Nashville for a little over two years now and they have never been happier. They love the city, the people, and the music. Helena Carter, a Nashville-based singer songwriter, and Loran Carter, an artist and photographer who has been living in Nashville since 2006, teamed up to create the Nashville Series, a project that aims to document the city’s music scene. The series began in 2012 with a video blog on Carter’s website documenting the making of her album “Naples.”
Since then, they’ve released five more videos documenting various aspects of the city’s music scene.
